NEW: Sheriff’s office releases names of deputies involved in Eau Claire Co. shooting

The Eau Claire County Sheriff’s Office has released the names of the two deputies involved in a shooting last week.

According to Sheriff Rom Cramer, the two deputies are identified as Deputy James Haworth and Deputy Daniel Eaton.

The two deputies shot at Reese Diesterhaft, 23, on August 7. He is being held in the Dunn County Jail on charges of theft, contributing to the delinquency of a minor and failing to appear in court – charges from 2012.

Haworth has been with the sheriff’s office since January 1995 while Eaton joined the force in April 2017.


Dunn County (WQOW) – The man who was shot by area deputies after he allegedly confronted them with a gun is now out of the hospital and in jail.

Dunn County Jail officials told News 18, Reese Diesterhaft, 23, was released from Mayo Hospital in Eau Claire Thursday afternoon. He is being held in the Dunn County Jail on charges of theft, contributing to the delinquency of a minor and failing to appear in court – charges from 2012.

He is also being held for authorities in South Dakota and in Eau Claire County. That is where Diesterhaft was shot Tuesday afternoon by Eau Claire County deputies after a chase that ended on Spehle Road southwest of Eau Claire. 

No charges have been filed in that incident, yet. 


Eau Claire County (WQOW) – The Eau Claire County Sheriff’s Office has now released the name of the man shot by two deputies on Tuesday afternoon.

According to the sheriff’s office, Reese A. Diesterhaft, 23, is in custody on outstanding warrants. Additional charges in Dunn and Eau Claire Counties are likely. 

The Eau Claire Sheriff’s Office said the Dunn County Sheriff’s Office got in a pursuit with Diesterhaft after a harassment complaint near Rock Falls. A deputy saw a gun and said Diesterhaft behaved in a way that led him to believe Diesterhaft may ambush him. Diesterhaft also had two warrants for his arrest.

The chase entered Eau Claire County on Highway 85 in the town of Brunswick. Dunn County officials lost sight of Diesterhaft, so a perimeter was set up and a Wisconsin State Patrol plane searched from the air. 

A deputy spotted the vehicle near Jene and Spehle Roads. The sheriff’s office said Diesterhaft got out of his vehicle and confronted authorities with a weapon. According to the press release, two Eau Claire County deputies shot him. Diesterhaft was flown to the hospital, but is expected to be okay.

The Eau Claire Police Department is leading the investigation with help from Menomonie police. 

The two deputies who shot Diesterhaft have been placed on leave, per state policy. Their names will be released next week, according to the sheriff’s office.

Eau Claire County (WQOW) – A man had to be airlifted to the hospital after an Eau Claire County deputy shot him Tuesday afternoon.

A high-speed chase that started at about 2 Tuesday afternoon in Dunn County ended at about 3:30 p.m. on Spehle Road in Brunswick, Eau Claire County.

Eau Claire County Sheriff Ron Cramer said the suspect was pulled over for a routine traffic stop. But when the deputy walked back to his squad car and learned the man had an arrest warrant in Dunn County, and one from another state, the 23-year-old suspect took off. 

Cramer said the Wisconsin State Patrol’s aircraft helped find him. "We’re concerned with the fact that he just got out of prison three weeks ago, and here we are, on National Night Out, and here we are on a major crime," Cramer told News 18.

Cramer said the Eau Claire Police Department will take the lead on the investigation. 

The Wisconsin Department of Justice investigates every officer involved shooting, and per policy, the officer who shot him will be put on leave.

Police have confirmed they shot a man after a chase in Dunn and Eau Claire Counties Tuesday afternoon.

Police say a 23-year-old man was shot and airlifted to the hospital with unknown injuries. 

Eau Claire police are taking the lead on the investigation. 

Dunn County Sheriff Dennis Smith told News 18 a man showed a gun during a traffic stop in Dunn County. That is when a chase started and entered Eau Claire County.

Eau Claire County Sheriff Ron Cramer said the situation started after a complaint. The man had a warrant out for his arrest. When they saw the man, they noticed a long-barrel gun.
