Eau Claire, Chippewa & Dunn Counties in top half of sex offense rates

(WQOW) – Counties in the Chippewa Valley rank among the highest in the state for sexual offenses.

Data from the Wisconsin Department of Justice shows in 2017, Eau Claire County ranked 30th out of 72 counties for sexual offense rates.

Chippewa County ranked 20th, while Dunn County ranked 17th.

The rates account for the number of offenses per 100,000 people, which have risen in all three counties since 2014.

Officials told News 18 the higher numbers of sex crimes could be because of the ‘Me Too’ movement, more people are reporting them than before.

"We have definitely seen in recent news cycles increasing publicity around sexual violence and people speaking out about their own experiences," said Amanda Schumacher, with the Family Support Center in Eau Claire. "It is our hope that this might be empowering individuals to come forward with their stories."

The family support centers in Eau Claire and Chippewa Falls offer one-on-one counseling for sexual assault victims and their families. To find out more about available services, click here.
