Eau Claire (WQOW) – Seniors are helping out some of the area’s smallest citizens go back to school.
Residents of Oakwood Hills Retirement stuffed 50 backpacks with school supplies for kids in need last year. This year, they’re hoping to stuff an Eau Claire city bus. Retirement home residents sat outside with signs drawing people in for notebooks, pens, pencils, backpacks and more. They were out until 3 p.m., confident that by then, the bus would be full.
"It means more for our residents," said Kim Schiel, regional experience coordinator for Oakwood Hills Retirement. "We have a lot of retired educators that live here with us at Oakwood Hills. It gives them an opportunity to give back to the community that’s been so good to them."
Oakwood Hills employees are working with the Eau Claire Area School District to divide the supplies amongst the more impoverished schools in Eau Claire. They are hoping to help at least 100 students.
If you missed the school supply campaign, you can still drop off supplies at Oakwood Hills Retirement (4316 Oakwood Hills Parkway) during normal business hours.
