Sex offender will be released into Chippewa County

Chippewa County (WQOW) – A registered sex offender will be released from prison and live in Chippewa County.

According to the Chippewa County Sheriff’s Office, Gerald Obernberger, 25, will be living on the streets of Chippewa County. There is not a residence lined up for him.

According to Chippewa County Sheriff Jim Kowalczyk, his department offered to house Obernberger in the jail until the Department of Corrections found him a place to live, but the DOC declined that offer. 

Obernberger will be released on June 26. He was previously convicted of 3rd degree sexual assault in Chippewa County and 2nd degree sexual assault of a child in Trempealeau County.

He will be under Department of Corrections supervision until July of 2028.

Conditions of his release include:

  • Prohibited from unsupervised contact with minors
  • No contact with his victims
  • No drugs or alcohol
  • Not to enter taverns or liquor stores
