Lightning strike causes small fire in Eau Claire County

Eau Claire County (WQOW) – A lightning strike was the cause of a fire in Eau Claire County Friday evening, but officials said it could have been much worse.

A call came in on a structure fire around 5:00 p.m. on Harless Rd. The Eau Claire Fire Department and Township Fire Department responded just after a call was made for a grass fire at the intersection of Hamilton Ave. and Drier Rd.

"What is actually turned out to be was a brush pile that was actually burning, but there was a lightning strike evident in the backyard that traveled through the ground and to the garage," said Deputy Chief Chad Peterson, with Township Fire Department.

The only damage it left was a quarter-size hold in the garage. The residence did lose power, but overall damage is estimated to be less than $100.

Still, any small stretch of even main roads where salt and/or sand have washed away from cars driving over it could quickly develop slippery spots from this very thin layer of ice
