Thorp baseball team credits midseason practice for first-ever state tournament berth

Thorp (WQOW) — The Thorp baseball program is making its first ever trip to state, but a month ago, it seemed unlikely the Cardinals would be one of four Division 4 teams still standing.

Thorp had won just four of its first 13 games, but since then, they’ve taken nine of 10 including a seven game winning streak.

Head coach Shannon Broda credits the momentum swing to a Sunday night practice following a loss to Augusta May 12. He said his players committed to give it their all to finish the year on a high note, never thinking it would result in a state tournament berth.

"It was more of that we wanted to finish strong with the idea of that ‘hey, if we get into the playoffs, you know, anything can happen.’ We just got the ball going the right way and one thing led to another and now we’re at this point. This has been very exciting," said Broda.

"One of our goals was to be the first team to make it to sectionals. Once we did that, from then on it was ‘why not?’ Why not go to state? Why not do something that’s never been done before," added senior Jakob Rosemeyer.

The Cardinals look to keep the momentum going against Johnson Creek in the WIAA Division 4 semifinals. First pitch is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday.

Weather Outlook: Active weather pattern returns, bringing multiple rounds of snow

Thankfully, we’ve been able to catch up on clearing the snow, and are close to getting back in the swing of things. Just as we settle down, however, we return back to an active weather pattern that will bring several chances for more accumulating snow over the next couple of weeks.
