Eau Claire City Council could create conduct policy for council members

EAU CLAIRE (WQOW) – The Eau Claire City Council is looking at the possibility of creating a code of conduct for council members.

Council Vice President Andrew Werthmann said they’ve been looking at creating a code of conduct in the past, but never got around to putting it in writing.

Werthmann said it’s important to have an expectation of how the council members treat each other.

He said the policy isn’t written yet, but will be discussed at Tuesday’s council meeting.

He said if they decide to have one, it could include penalties for councilors who break the rules.

"I know in other cities they’ve considered things such as mediation sessions, by state statutes you can ask for that. Another thing is potentially ask for community service if someone violates these rules," Werthmann said.

Werthmann said the actual wording of the policy will be reviewed in late July, and hopefully there will be a vote in early September.

The city council will discuss its options Tuesday.
