Veterinarian warns of letting dogs hang out of car windows

Eau Claire (WQOW)- The sight of a dog hanging its head out the car window, with its ears flopping in the wind gets a few smiles and laughs, but it can be dangerous for your pet.

A veterinarian at Northside Pet Hospital in Eau Claire said many things can go wrong if your dogs head is out the car window like flying rocks hitting their face. Even a June bug can take out a dog’s eye if the car is moving fast enough.

"We’ve actually seen this on occasion is a pet either jumping out the window or falling out of the vehicle while the vehicle is moving. That of course can cause some major and life-threatening traumas" said Dr. Stacy Swantz a veterinarian at Northside Pet Hospital.

Swantz said it’s also important to not put your dog in the bed of your truck, because they’ve also seen dogs jump out and get injured.

She said the best way to transport your animal is in a crate.

The good news is the salt and sand put down yesterday is still working, and many municipalities were out again putting down more today. Still, any small stretch of even main roads where salt and/or sand have washed away from cars driving over it could quickly develop slippery spots from this very thin layer of ice
