Historic church on fire in downtown Milwaukee

MILWAUKEE (WISN) – A four-alarm fire is raging at an historic church at 9th and Highland downtown Milwaukee.

Police ask people to avoid the area so firefighters can do their job.

Trinity Lutheran Church was founded by immigrants from Pomerania, Germany, in 1847 and is the second oldest Missouri Synod Congregation in Wisconsin.

The church was originally at 4th Street between Wells and Kilbourn. It then moved to 4th and Wells streets before moving to 9th and Highland.

The church is on the National Register of Historic Places.
