Chippewa County (WQOW) – Chippewa County Sheriff Jim Kowalczyk is squaring off against first time challenger Travis Hakes.

Hakes is from Tilden and has 12 years of law enforcement experience after graduating from CVTC.

Sheriff Kowalczyk resides in Boyd and has been part of the Sheriff’s office since 1978.

Hakes said he relies on his policy ideas to boost results and morale in the department.

While Kowalczyk said his experience will put him ahead in the final tally.

Overall, they both feel there’s one top priority for the safety of their citizens.

“I think one of the main issues in regards to law enforcement is the epidemic involving the use and abuse of meth, ” Kowalczyk said.

“It plagues our county, it infects our schools, it infects every department within the Chippewa County Governement Center,” Hakes told News 18.

Both Hakes and Kowalczyk said cracking down on meth use will be their number one priority to better the lives of people across Chippewa County.
