Menomonie (WQOW) – The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources helped people kick off 2019 by connecting with nature Tuesday. It was part of a nationwide First Day Hikes campaign.

People across the Chippewa Valley gathered at the Red Cedar State Trail in Menomonie to enjoy the outdoors and learn a little about the history of the trail. Last year, sub-zero temperatures caused no one to show up, but Park Ranger Calvin Kunkle was excited the weather cooperated and said it’s important to promote the beautiful outdoor scenery Wisconsin has to offer.

“We want to get folks out the first of the year just to get them excited to be outdoors. Tell them that it’s a great time even in the winter time, there’s a lot of things to see,” Kunkle said.

The DNR has other outdoor winter events and activities on their calendar. You can find those by clicking here.
